The meaning of the Divine Liturgy In ancient times the word “Litur- gy” (in Greek λειτουργία from the words λεῖτος = public and ἔργον =work) meant a work for the bene- fit of the people. In the Old Testa- ment it denotes the worship which the people offered through priests of the Mosaic Law. Since New Testa- ment times the word “Liturgy”, pre- ceded usually by the adjective “Di- vine”, has signified that Church service which is filled with memo- ries of our Lord’s Life and teachings from His Nativity to His Ascension into Heaven. The Divine Liturgy is the great central act of Christian worship, offered to God for the bene- fit of the members of the Church, the Christians.
